Jim Croce was an American singer-songwriter whose fame was cut abruptly short when he died in a plane crash, aged only 30. By the time he died he already had several hits to his name, the most enduring of which was “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” which hit No.1 in US charts the year he died.
His career began in the same way as many, playing at clubs and coffee houses, building his act and writing songs which spanned the genres. For a while his wife was part of the act, Jim & Ingrid Croce, and his skills developed further when he met his songwriting partner Maury Meuhleisen. In 1972 he signed a three year record deal and released his first two albums, You Don’t Mess Around With Jim and Life & Times, later the same year. His No.1 single, “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” topped the charts in the summer of 1973 but by the September, both he and Meuhleisen were killed in a plane crash. His third album, I Got a Name, was due to be released the day after he died and interest in his previous albums soared. In the end he had several posthumous hits including the beautiful No.1, “Time in a Bottle”.
Since his death several albums of his material have been released, and in 1990 he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
